Skiing is one of the most popular and traditional holidays in the world, and indeed a large portion of the transfer customers we serve are heading off for a little slice of winter paradise.

Ski resorts exist all over the world – while some of the most commonly thought of ski destinations are typically in France, Switzerland, and North America, there are in fact ski resorts to enjoy everywhere from South Africa, to Uruguay and even Australia.

Of course, skiing is not just a snowsport enthusiast’s dream, as Instagram has become an increasingly integrated part of our travel experiences, ski resorts have also presented the perfect setting for Instagram travel snappers. The hashtag #ski racked up 13.5 million posts on Instagram.

With this in mind, we decided to crunch the numbers and find out the most Instagrammed ski resorts that are clearly a cut above the rest.

We compiled a list of the world’s top ski resorts and measured the number of times they have been hashtagged on the photo sharing site to determine the most Instagrammed ski resorts in the world. Check them out below.

1. Whistler, Canada

Number of Hashtags: 2,525,621

Taking top spot above all the other resorts in our list is Whistler in Canada, with almost double the number of hashtags of any other ski resort on Instagram. The resort is a mecca for skiers and played host to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The hub of Whistler is a compact, chalet-style pedestrian village at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Their fun Instagram posts consist of people showing off their skills and posing in front of beautiful landscapes.

2. Chamonix, France

Number of Hashtags: 1,347,311

In second place is Chamonix in France, often regarded by many as the best freeride resort in the entire world. It’s clear why Chamonix has come in second place with over a million hashtags to its name. Their images boast high rocky crags, picture-perfect towns and long, meandering slopes. Ever since the Winter Olympics of 1924 were held here, Chamonix has been popular. The resort has six different ski areas that cater to all levels from absolute beginners to experts looking for a thrill.

Chamonix’s popularity is helped by the fact that it is very accessible with the journey from Geneva to Chamonix taking just over an hour by road. It is also served by the new Leman Express train from Geneva.

3. Vail Mountain, USA

Number of Hashtags: 1,125,702

Vail Mountain is the first ski resort on our list from America, located near the town of Vail in Eagle County, Colorado. The resort is known for being the most luxurious in the US, with a large number of upmarket hotels and high-class restaurants serving everything you could ever want. Since its conception in the 1960s, Vail has grown to 33 lifts and 193 marked trails. The hashtags associated with the ski resort are more than pics of slopes and mountains, they show off a luxury lifestyle with people relaxing in hot tubs, lavish hotels and delicious food.

4. Lake Louise, Canada

Number of Hashtags: 913,316

Lake Louise ski resort is the second Canadian resort on our list, cementing the country as one of the best places to go to find the most beautiful ski resorts. The resort is located in Banff National Park whose Rocky Mountain peaks and turquoise glacial lakes make it the picture-perfect area to go skiing. Their Instagram features a healthy mix of sweeping landscape images and people skiing through pristine powder.

5. Zermatt, Switzerland

Number of Hashtags: 885,190

The most notable image of Zermatt is the Matterhorn Mountain looming over the popular ski resort. Their Instagram offers up beautiful photographs of the landscape with the Matterhorn front and centre. At 855,190 images, Zermatt is certainly one of the most Instagrammable ski resorts in the world. The ski resort is based in southern Switzerland’s Valais canton and people come from all over the world to ski, climb and hike throughout the year.

Getting to Zermatt is an adventure in itself. The village has been free of cars since the 1970’s so the last leg of your journey is made with a combination of train and electric taxi.

6. Breckenridge Ski Resort, USA

Number of Hashtags: 844,988

Breckenridge ski resort is based in an authentic mining town and offers world-class skiing and riding. The resort is home to North America’s highest lift named The Imperial Express which rises to 12,840 feet (3914 metres) above sea level. The village of Breckenridge is one of the highlights with a lively town centre that gets even busier in the evenings. On weekends, the streets are packed with people looking to shop or visit one of the 100-plus restaurants. Their Instagram boasts skiers performing difficult tricks and hot dogging down the steep slopes.

7. Livigno, Italy

Number of Hashtags: 534,462

Livigno is a ski resort in the Italian Alps close to the Swiss border and is known for its snow parks and great snow record. Nicknamed by some as ‘Little Tibet’ the resort is set in a high, wide and remote valley which means transfers to Livigno from the nearest airports can take several hours. The area enjoys duty-free status which makes it a great place for people to shop, especially for alcohol and tobacco which makes it a magnet for those looking for a bargain. Instagram posts from here tell tales of icy landscapes, mountains covered in snow and perfectly groomed slopes.

8. Niseko, Japan

Number of Hashtags: 525,646

Niseko Ski Resort is based in the chilly North of Japan on Hokkaido island and is considered to be the country’s top ski resort. It’s renowned for its consistency and quality of snow throughout the year and sees 15m+ of snow each season. When searching the ski resort on Instagram you’re met with images of steep mountain slopes, forested pistes and groups of friends having a great time.

9. Keystone Resort, USA

Number of Hashtags: 521,088

With just over 500,000 Instagram posts, Keystone Resort in the US comes in 9th place in our list. This resort is located in Colorado and consists of three mountains, Dercum Mountain, North Peak and the Outback as well as five Bowls which means it offers exciting skiing options at all levels. Keystone describes itself as a laidback mountain playground and welcomes kids of all ages making it the ideal resort for families.

10. Courchevel, France

Number of Hashtags: 480,396

Rounding off the top ten with almost 500,000 Instagram posts is Courchevel in the French Alps. The Courchevel valley forms part of the world’s largest lift-linked ski area – The Trois Vallées consists of 166 lifts and an enormous 600km of pistes. Their Instagram account is very active and gives an insight in to life on and off the slopes. Courchevel 1850 at the top of the valley caters to Europe’s mega rich so images of ultra luxury hotels and restaurants abound. The well-rounded ski resort is great for any skill level and the area provides more than just skiing with shops, hotels and restaurants galore.

We compiled a list of over 100 of the top ski resorts around the world.

We then analysed each of these resorts, using the top three most popular hashtags related to each ski resort and added them together to find the total number of posts per each ski resort.

We then ranked the resorts based on the number of posts and selected the top 50 highest ranking resorts with the most posts.

The results were measured from February of 2020.
